Trainee of the Year nominee – Melanie Haney

It’s National Skills Week, and to celebrate we are putting the spotlight on some of our outstanding apprentices, trainees and students who are nominated in the upcoming 2017 Tasmanian Training Awards held on Friday, 1 September. Good luck to all of the Work & Training nominees!

Melanie Haney – Trainee of the Year nominee

While completing her Certificate III in Individual Support with Work & Training and Freemasons Homes of Southern Tasmania, Melanie was eager and excited to begin a strong career in the health industry.

“I recommend hands on training for Aged Care. By the time I finished my training I had already gained experience by learning from carers in the workplace. On the job learning through exposure in all fields of work including manual handling, how to care for a client emotionally, how to feed, how to assist with hygiene and work with people from different cultures has been fabulous. I have had exposure in the low care wing, medium care, high care, palliative and respite care areas.”

Now Melanie is enjoying mentoring other trainees in her workplace.

“I would recommend a School Based Aged Care traineeship to other students. I gained my college qualification whilst also gaining workplace experience and a qualification for life through my traineeship.”

“Through the experience with Work & Training and Freemasons Homes I have gained more of an enjoyment towards the vocation of aged care than what I thought I ever would. “
