Lisa Gilbert has worked with the Tasmanian Fire Service for almost 16 years. When she finished high school, she wasn’t sure what path to take.
“I was in Year 12 and I thought, ‘I don’t know what I want to do’. I was interested in traineeships, so I went to Work & Training” Lisa says.
After engaging with Work & Training, Lisa was excited to find various opportunities opening up for her.
“I got offered two jobs on the same day. I got one with the fire service, and one with a law firm. I chose the fire service, and here I am” she smiles.
Lisa credits the support she has received from Work & Training with helping her to begin and develop her career.
“Their support has gotten me where I am today. I’m a Clerical Officer with the fire service, but over the years I’ve acted in many positions, as Team Leader and Senior Clerical Officer” she explains.
“Connecting with Work & Training has given me these skills, the knowledge and an excellent workplace.”
A lot has changed in Lisa’s role since she first began. Undertaking further certificates through Work & Training has helped to set her up for growth, both within her role and the wider fire services industry.
“Going through the certificates, you see the progress. They have definitely have set me up through the years” she says.
“When I have the opportunity, I keep going back to Work & Training for all of my certificates. I’ve stuck with them because I’ve always had positive outcomes.”
During the devastating bushfires which burnt in the South of the state in early 2019, Lisa’s commitment to her role and the Tasmanian community was evident. She returned to work during maternity leave to support efforts to contain fires burning close to Hobart.
“We’re an emergency service, so we are all for the community and the volunteers that we work with” she explains.
“Without the initial opportunity from Work & Training, I couldn’t be here giving my all to them.”
