Brayden & John’s Story

30 Love

“Work & Training have provided us with a great amount of support and it’s certainly relieved a lot of pressure from us. It allows me time to concentrate on running the business.”

– John Hutton, General Manager, Glasgow Engineering

Glasgow Engineering has been in operation since 1892. During its 127-year history, the business has seen many apprentices come through its doors.

Brayden Pascoe is one of them. He is currently completing his fourth year as a Fitter and Turner, and after starting his apprenticeship elsewhere he sought work at Glasgow Engineering.

“I just stuck my head in the door” he laughs.

Joining Glasgow Engineering has meant that he is also supported by Work & Training.

“With Work & Training, I’ve actually been able to work to finish my apprenticeship and go well in it. It’s helped me develop my career, I definitely see myself as a long-term fitter and machinist.”

Being named Apprentice of the Year for 2019 as part of local radio station Chilli FM’s annual competition is evidence that Brayden’s hard work is paying off.

“Apprentices get nominated by someone – I didn’t even know I was in it this year!” he laughs.

Brayden is grateful to have the support provided by Work & Training beyond his workplace.

“To have that support outside your apprenticeship – making sure you get the right allowances, your clothing and gear sorted, and that you’re on top of school – it helps heaps.”

John Hutton is Managing Director of Glasgow Engineering, and has been with the business for 20 years. He started as a Fitter and Turner, progressing to Diesel Mechanic before moving into an operations role.

“We initially turned to Work & Training to assist with admin and HR. Outsourcing that gave us better flexibility” he says.

“Work & Training have provided us with a great amount of support and it’s certainly relieved a lot of pressure from us. It allows me time to concentrate on running the business.”

John gets great satisfaction in seeing apprentices like Brayden complete their qualifications while at
Glasgow Engineering.

“Seeing a young person go up through four years of training and finish their apprenticeship, then at the end there’s the Work & Training Awards night – I enjoy that” he says.

“They’ve all got their individual goals, but the business is supported by Work & Training to help get them to that goal.”
