When Shane started his Certificate III in Landscape Construction (AHC30921) through Work & Training in September 2025, he was beginning a new chapter and learning the skills to build a career in the industry.
Today, he’s helping build something much bigger.
As the first Work & Training apprentice hosted by Artisan Greencare, Shane is part of the team delivering an exciting new social enterprise hub in Wynyard, backed by $9.5 million in Federal Government funding.
Working alongside supervisor and mentor Dudley Billing, Shane is gaining hands-on experience in landscape construction while contributing to a project that will create opportunities for people across the region for years to come.
Work & Training Apprenticeship Consultant Claire King said Shane’s commitment and willingness to learn have stood out from day one.
“Shane has embraced every opportunity to develop his skills and grow in his trade. It’s been fantastic to see his confidence build and to watch him become a valued member of the team.”
The new precinct will include workshops, a dedicated First Nations workshop, a commercial greenhouse, an Artisan Hub and sustainability infrastructure, creating a space where people can learn, connect and develop new skills.
For Dudley Billing, the project is about investing in people and supporting them to reach their potential.
“Without innovative thinking, this region is dead in the water, and innovation comes from creativity,” Dudley said. “We’re backing people and their right to learn.”
Shane’s journey shows what can happen when determination meets opportunity. Through hard work, commitment and the support of those around him, he’s building valuable skills, contributing to a significant community project and creating a future for himself in the industry.
