Once her children had grown up, Tania Swinton looked to start developing her career. She came across Work & Training while online, and decided to enrol in the Certificate III in Aged Care.
“My mum was a disability worker, so I had a little bit of inkling as to what I wanted to do. After I started my Certificate, I went for a two week placement at an aged care facility. I loved it so I asked to go back and managed to get employment at that facility.”
Before having children, Tania took on casual work in bakeries and takeaway shops. Connecting with Work & Training has enabled her to build the career she’s dreamed of since high school.
“When I was in high school I knew that I wanted to be a nurse, I just wasn’t very academic at that point. I had to grow into that career” Tania laughs.
“The qualification through Work & Training was a stepping stone – it showed me that I could actually be an academic person. Once I was employed as an aged care worker, I started to look at the nursing side of things and it became a stepping stone for me to head to university to become a Registered Nurse. I got my degree and I’ve been working as an RN for over 12 months.”
Tania credits her Trainer with ensuring she stayed engaged and interested in the course.
“Work & Training were fabulous. Vicki was a fabulous teacher, she made us want to come in every day. There was always something new and exciting happening” she says.
“The way that Vicki taught kept us interested. You were always striving to do your best because she was such a great teacher.”
Tania believes that she wouldn’t have been able to achieve what she has without the support from Work & Training.
“If it wasn’t for Work & Training, I wouldn’t be where I am now. I wouldn’t have dreamed of going back to university, let alone becoming an RN. I have a lot to thank Work & Training for – they’ve enabled me to develop my career.”
Tania is proud of what Work & Training has helped her to achieve.
“Working in aged care, being an RN and contributing to the community – we’re the front line helping” Tania says.
“It’s very rewarding and fulfilling to do what I do. You can walk away knowing that you’ve helped that person – you can feel proud of what you’ve done.”
